Towards a European data space for energy

Date & Time
21 October @ 8 AM - 6 PM
Duration
10 hours
Event Description

120-minute session

Over the last few years, digital technologies have transformed the economy and society, affecting all sectors of activity and the daily lives of all living in the European Union (EU).

In a society where individuals will generate ever-increasing amounts of data, the way data is collected and used must put the interests of the individual first. This is in accordance with European values, fundamental rights and rules. Citizens will trust and embrace data-driven innovations if they are confident that personal data sharing in the EU will be fully compliant with the data protection rules.

Informed decision-making

The EU can become a leading role model for a society empowered by data to make informed decisions. To fulfil this ambition, the EU can build on a strong legal framework with its internal market and with competitive companies of all sizes and varied industrial bases. This framework should include data protection, fundamental rights, safety and cybersecurity.

If the EU acquires a leading role in the data economy, it has to act now and tackle issues ranging from connectivity to processing and storage of data, computing power and cybersecurity. To achieve this, the European Commission announced it will promote the development of common European data spaces in strategic economic sectors and domains of public interest, including the energy sector.

The time is now to gather input from high-level experts and policymakers on how this energy data space can be best designed and deployed in the EU.

What we will discuss

This live discussion will address:

issues with access, exchange, security and governance of energy-related data;
the preparedness of the energy sector to promote a higher availability and cross-sector sharing of data in a customer-centric, secure and trustworthy manner under a Common European energy data space; and
the role of data-driven innovation and of the cloud-edge technologies supporting the ongoing sector’s digital transformation.
